Fr Tristan, Fr Mark and pupils from our three church schools today lead our Annual Holocaust Memorial Day Service. We gathered at 11am at St Mary’s Rufford.

During the service Rufford School pupils performed the song ‘Hope for a better tomorrow’ giving us all the opportunity to understand our roles in ensuring the world can hopefully be a peaceful one in years to come.Sam  ( Rufford CE School )read the poem ‘What if it were me?’ by Noamh Hannon whilst representatives from both classes lit candles in memory of those who died in the Holocaust and those who continue to die in atrocities around our world.

Pupils from Mere Brow School performed Pastor Niemoller’s Poem  called ‘First They Came’.:

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Ella and Daisy from Tarleton Holy Trinity School read beautifully which further added to what was a very moving service.

Fr Tristan reminded us that calling people name sis the first step on the road to thinking of them as less than us and that can so easily lead to genocide.
