Parish Magazine and Poem
The June edition of our Parish magazine will pay tribute to HM The Queen.
Our Rector writes:
The best tribute we can pay to HM The Queen as we celebrate Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee is to make a commitment to emulate her life of service.
LLM Emeritus, Ian Well has written this poem in honour of Her Majesty:
I remember the Coronation –
it rained.
It rained in the flickering image
of the tiny TV
in the tiny house
crammed with three sets of neighbours.
It rained on the unarmed British bobbies
lining the route in faraway London,
facing the procession,
not the crowd.
It rained on the bunting,
fluttering wetly in red white and blue
from telegraph pole
and lamppost.
It rained on the Queen of Tonga
enormously regal
in an open topped carriage
waving all the way down The Mall.
It rained on the Abbey
where the augmented choir was hidden away in galleries
with auxiliary conductors to try to hold them together;
… and when they sang ‘Zadok the priest’ it showed.
It rained on the balcony,
where Charles and Anne
looked just like their images
on the savings stamps.
It rained as the RAF Canberras
swept down the runways
taking Kodachrome newsreel
to our new Queen’s loyal dominions.
It rained into the Coronation chicken,
invented to be cheap and cheerful
in a time of austerity,
now reinvented for a depression Jubilee.
Yes, I remember the Coronation.
Sweets came off the ration –
or did they go back on – I can’t remember.
But I remember the Coronation.
It rained.
