Sunday 1st January 2023 – New Year’s Day – The Naming & Circumcision of Jesus
✝️10:30am Sung Eucharist – Holy Trinity, Tarleton (Note one service only today!)
COLLECT FOR THE NAMING AND CIRCUMCISION OF JESUS – Almighty God, whose blessed Son was circumcised in obedience to the law for our sake and given the Name that is above every name: give us grace faithfully to bear his Name, to worship him in the freedom of the Spirit, and to proclaim him as the Saviour of the world; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
FIRST READING: Number 6:22-end – The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: “‘“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.”’
“So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.” This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM 66:2-3, 5, 6, 8. Response v. 2 Response: O God, be gracious and bless us, o God, be gracious and bless us.
SECOND READING: Galatians 4:4-7 – But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’ So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God. This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia, alleluia. Alleluia, alleluia. At various times in the past, and in various different ways, God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets; but in our own time, the last days, he has spoken to us through his Son. Alleluia! Alleluia.
GOSPEL: Luke 2:15-21 – Hear the Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord.
When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.’ So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. After eight days had passed, it was time to circumcise the child; and he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.
During Communion at the Eucharist today, the Choir will sing the Veni Creator (Come Holy Ghost) to pray for the Holy Spirit’s blessing on the New Year. Please do join in this prayer:
Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, and lighten with celestial fire.
Thou the anointing Spirit art, who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart.
Thy blessed unction from above is comfort, life, and fire of love.
Enable with perpetual light the dullness of our blinded sight.
Anoint and cheer our soiled face with the abundance of thy grace.
Keep far from foes, give peace at home: where thou art guide, no ill can come.
Teach us to know the Father, Son, and thee, of both, to be but One, that through the ages all along, this may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
A New Year Prayer – O God, your days are without beginning and without end. We dedicate this coming year to you. Give us such prosperity as you know is good for us, and make us abound in doing whatever is pleasing to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Mozarabic Collect for New Year)
HYMNS – Angels from the realms of glory, See him lying on a bed of straw! In the bleak midwinter! See amid the winter’s snow, Come Holy Ghost (plainchant) & Of the Father’s heart begotten
